Liberating the Internet

Wael Ghonim believes that there are five challenges that are preventing us from becoming a better community online. He also suggests some ideas that can help us become a better community.

We face five challenges in social media. The first challenge is that we as a community do not know how to deal with rumors. The second challenge we face is that we tend to only communicate with others that we agree with, leaving others out. The third challenge is that online discussions usually descend into angry mobs of arguing people. The fourth challenge is that it is hard to change opinions of the people once they have agreed with something. The fifth and final challenge we face is that shallow conversations are preferred over deep conversations. Wael says and I quote, "It's as if we agreed that we are here to talk at each other instead of talking with each other."

With these five challenges, Wael suggests a way to overcome them with solutions. Is first suggestion is that instead of worrying about the number of readers on a post, we should care about the amount of people we could start wondering how many people we have impacted with our posts. The second suggestion is to give more incentives to engage in conversations, rather than giving opinion all the time. His third suggestion is to reward people for reading and responding to views they disagree with. His fourth and final suggestion was to make it more socially acceptable to change opinions on a subject. "...we need to rethink today's social media ecosystem and redesign its experiences to reward thoughtfulness, civility and mutual understanding."

So to conclude, Wael Goham is trying to make social media as a platform where we can be civil and thoughtful about subjects, rather than a place where we can rant about subjects to each other with no clear evidence and is rather opinion based.

Myer-Briggs Personality Test

  • Strengths include a charming attitude, sensitive towards others, being imaginative, passionate, curious, and artistic
Wow! I totally did not expect this to come up! I can't agree with it because this is not me, but I like doing art so I can relate to the artistic!!!! Wow!!!!
  • Weaknesses include being "fiercely independent", unpredictable, easily stressed, overly competitive, and a fluctuating self esteem
Wow! I guess I am an independent individual! I don't know if I'm easily stressed, but school stresses me out over nothing sometimes! I guess I do try my best to be at the top but not really! I don't think I have a fluctuating self esteem, but the results show me I am!
  • Friendships ISFPs' relaxed, non-judgmental attitudes make it easy for them to get along with others, but it's not always the same way around. In friendship, ISFPs are some of the most comfortable people around.
I did not know this about myself! This quiz is full of surprises! I'm not sure if I am within the range of this description, but I am surprised to know that the quiz tells me so!
  • Career Path Wealth, power, structure, advancement and security are all lesser goals to ISFP personalities' greatest need: creative freedom. ISFPs crave a tangible outlet for their imagination, a chance to express themselves artistically.
I like art! I might actually pursue in art! Wow! I am learning so much about myself from this quiz. This is very great. I think I can relate to this.

Dear Future Self…

Dear Future Self,

In ten years I might be in college. I might have a job. I might be doing stuff. My goals are to have 1000 cats even though I'm allergic. So maybe I'll do that. I might be doing great stuff. I might be studying to whatever career path I am heading towards. I might be doing great things in life. I might be travelling the world. I might have a house. I might have a car. I might later become a CEO of a company. I might just do that.

                                                                                           Maybe by yours truly,
                                                                                          13 year old you

Did you reach the goal(s) you created in January?

I met my goals I created for myself in January. My goals for myself was to have a persistent grade A in technology, and I have succeeded in that because I have an A+. Like I had planned for myself, I just completed all my assignments. I don't know if I completed my other goal. My other goal was for my to maintain a high typing speed whilst having great accuracy. Honestly, I just got lazier and got slower at typing. I think that's the only reason I gave up.

Thomas Edison

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. - Thomas Edison

This is a great way to see your mistakes. Instead of being negative and seeing your mistakes badly, try again! Good things might happen if your try and try again.

Media Codes

  • What is your favorite brand? Why?
  • What types of codes are used by this brand to make it appealing to people (symbolic, written or technical)?
  • Do think this brand's advertising influences whether you like it? Why or why not?

I like Chipotle. I like it because I like the food there.

They use symbolic.

No, I decided to try it one day because everyone around me had a good opinion on Chipotle. The brand's advertising is weak but the food is good.
